Slavery
  • Slaves were ordered around by their  owners , if they were not to listen they would be beaten by their owner , they had to  wash clothes , bath the owners children , make breakfast , dinner , and supper, they also had to, pick fruits, vegetables , and work out in the fields.

  • Blacks could not go to the same school as whites
  • They had to use different water fountains
  • They could not eat at some restaurants as the whites

  • JIM CROW LAWS stopped blacks from doing important things, like having to take a test in order to vote and they had to pay poll tax

RECONSTRUCTION
  • During reconstruction freed slaves had the same rights as everyone else but the slaves did not have a place to go their homes were gone they didn’t have a job so they moved back with their ex owners , and planted more crops ,so when they would sell the crops they planted they would split the money with their ex owners, and that is called…. SHARECROPPING !!!!!!

Brown Vs. Board of education

  • The court ruled that “separate but equal” schools were unconstitutional. Because of this ruling all of Virginia’s schools were ordered to desegregate.


  • Instead of integrating immediately, Virginia resisted the integration of schools in a movement called The Massive Resistance movement witch was led by a man named Harry F. Byrd SR.

  • In the Supreme Court case Brown VS Board Of Education, the court ruled that “Separate but equal” Schools were unconstitutional.  Because of this ruling all of Virginia's schools were ordered to integrated. VIRGINIA 1900-PRESENT

  • During the 20th century, Virginia changed from a rural agriculture society to a more urban industrious society .


  • After Reconstruction, people left the farms and moved to cities to find better jobs. This caused by these two reasons :crop prices and tractors. The cities these two reasons :people were looking for better jobs opportunities and technological development in transportation including trains, cars , and street cars.

  • The state government has 3 branches or parts, the legislative, Executive, and the judicial branch.

Legislative Branch
  • The legislative branch makes the laws and includes the senate and the House Of Delegates.

  • The Executive branch enforces the laws and includes the governor.

Judicial Branch
  • The Judicial branch decides whether the laws are fair and agrees with the state constitution.  This branch includes the Supreme Court which is the highest court in the state.

Tourism
  • Tourism is a major part of Virginia’s economy.  Places like Busch Gardens in Williamsburg contribute to this.
